Fishing Reel Drag Systems Posted 5/9/2003

When your fishing reel is not in use for any length of time be sure to completely loosen the drag. By reducing or eliminating the pressure on the drag washers you can prevent drag malfunctions. Continuous pressure on the drag washers will compress the washers and could result in a drag that is either too tight or too loose instead of just right.

If you are using one of the new braided lines and you cannot get your drag to tighten down the problem may not be your drag washers. The knot you used to attach the line to your reel spool may have failed. Secure the spool so it will not turn and then pull the line. If the line turns on the spool your attachment knot has failed. Remove the line from the spool, retie the knot and then wind the line back on the spool.
