|2017 Update -When To Repair And When To Buy New!
My first rule of service has always been that if the cost to repair or service a fishing reel amounts to half or more of the cost of the fishing reel new today, then it may be time to consider buying a new fishing reel.
If your fishing reel is no longer in production and new repair parts are no longer available, then find its comparable replacement fishing reel available today and use that as a bench mark price.
Please take into account all the costs to get your fishing reel serviced. You will have postage and insurance for a round trip to the repair center and back. There will be a labor charge and the cost of new - not used - original replacement parts.
If you elect to repair your fishing reel keep in mind that you will still be fishing with a used repaired fishing reel. The parts that failed once might be the first to fail again.
If your fishing reel is a long time owned family fishing reel or has collector's value the cost of repairing or rebuilding the fishing reel may not be the only major issue. The challenges will include finding a repair center with new not used original parts and a repair technician with the experience to fix the reel properly.
Are you using a fishing reel that you really like, is giving you good trouble free service and it is the only reel you want to use? As soon as you know this consider buying another one or two -or more - while your now favorite make and model of reel is still available. Then you will aways have a back up fishing reel. And, and you will have a source of new replacement parts available for the reel.
